Vincenzo Muratore - Sculptor and Painter
Vincenzo Muratore is an Italian artist and sculptor, born in Palermo, but now lives and works in London, where I met and photographed him. Vincenzo has always been creative and loved art from a young age, and studied classical art from the age of 13 to 18. But as much as he loved it, he wasn’t ready to try to make it as a professional artist at the time. Instead, he chose to study Economics and Social Studies and, after graduating in 2010, began what he called his “first life” as a Project Manager. But deep down he already knew that office life wasn’t truly for him. So he continued to pursue his future life as an artist whenever he could.
“I was working in an office, shirt and tie, during the day,” he says, “but every night, weekend and holiday, I was working as an artist – painting, sculpting and exhibiting – splitting my soul in two!”
In fact, the seeds had already been sown much earlier, back in 2000, when, at the age of only 15, he met an artist named Dominico and saw him working with clay for the first time. “I remember him working with these big pieces of sculpture in clay and I was so fascinated, but at the time I was still young and didn’t yet believe I would become a professional artist. But it was something that stayed with me forever. I still remember that scene so clearly… it never left me.”
Vincenzo continued in his career as a project manager by day and an artist by night, painting and sculpting whenever he could. But as he began experimenting more with clay and different mediums, that early memory resurfaced, and he decided to reconnect with Dominico after more than 15 years.
“I knew he worked with marble, and remembering my experience with him and having seen him at work, I contacted him and asked him to help and teach me marble sculpting. He invited me to spend time with him in Carrara, the home of marble, and he taught me the rudiments of working with it. From that point on I fell in love with marble and knew it was the medium I wanted to work in.”
In 2016, Vincenzo moved to London and decided to truly commit to his future as an artist and sculptor. He continued developing his style, working in many mediums, but returned to Carrara whenever he could to learn from Dominico and refine his skills in marble sculpture.
Then came 2020. Covid hit, and Vincenzo found himself stuck in London, unable to travel to Carrara to continue his marble training. But what first felt like a setback became an important turning point.
“For me it was actually a very lucky event,” he said. “I suddenly had the chance to start studying how to model in 3D. I knew there were machines that could help me, and I wanted to learn everything I could about the technology and really start 3D modelling.”
From that point he shaped his entire art practice around 3D modelling, which gave him the ability to design bigger pieces and take on much larger commissions. And around the same time, in 2023, he was accepted into the Royal College of Art, where he completed a Masters in Sculpture.
Since graduating, Vincenzo has continued developing his techniques and deepening his relationship with marble. He now produces work for a major property developer in London and creates marble pieces for clients in Italy, Spain, the UK and across the world.
